Scripture Focus:
“These are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the children
of Israel…” Genesis 36:31
Genesis 36 paints a curious contrast. While Esau’s descendants were becoming kings,
establishing cities, and rising in status, Jacob’s lineage was drowning in dysfunction. Reuben
had sinned against his father. Simeon and Levi had spilled innocent blood. There was chaos.
And yet, these were the covenant people.
This reality unsettles many believers today. Why do the unrighteous rise so quickly while God’s
children seem to struggle? But here is the truth: God’s children are not being delayed, they are
being developed. Esau’s line built kingdoms, but Jacob’s line carried the promise. Israel didn’t
need instant kingship, they needed transformation. God was more interested in raising a people
shaped by encounters, not just elevated by titles.
Don’t be jealous of Esau’s speed. God’s process for His own is slow, deep, and lasting. The
throne God prepares for His people cannot be inherited without brokenness, pruning, and
surrender. Kings in Edom faded. But Israel’s lineage birthed the Messiah.
Prayer:
Father, help me not to envy the temporary rise of others. Train me, break me, and build me
according to Your covenant plan. Amen.
