Scripture Focus: “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” Philippians 4:4 NKJV
Exodus 15 is a chapter of joy, where Israel burst into song after walking through the parted Red Sea. Miriam led the women with tambourines, and the people danced in triumph at the greatness of God. That song was not meant to be read flatly; it was written to be sung, rejoiced over, and celebrated. Imagine the sound of two million voices echoing gratitude to the One who crushed Pharaoh’s army in the sea. With such an experience, one would think Israel would never doubt God again. Yet, just a few verses later, they complained about bitter water, beginning a cycle of praise when pleased and grumbling when tested. They praised when full, complained when hungry, praised when delivered, complained when waiting. Their joy depended on circumstances, and their faith was as unstable as the waves that had just been stilled before them.
This is not God’s will for us. The New Testament calls us to a higher life: to rejoice in the Lord always, not sometimes, not when everything looks good, not only after miracles, but always. Joy is not a reaction to circumstances; it is a posture of faith rooted in God’s unchanging character. To live in constant gratitude is to say, “God is faithful whether or not I see immediate answers.” A believer who only praises when things are fine lives a haphazard life, tossed up and down by circumstances. But a believer who praises always is steady, unshakable, and victorious. God deserves consistent honor, not fluctuating emotions. In every trial, there is still a reason to rejoice: His presence is with us, His promises remain true, and His plan is working for our good. Do not let your life become a cycle of praise and complaint. Instead, choose rejoicing as your lifestyle, your default response, your testimony of faith.
Prayer: Lord, deliver me from inconsistent praise. Help me to rejoice in You always, no matter what my situation looks like, knowing that You are good and faithful. Amen.
