During my teenage years, I was blessed with adults who were deeply intentional about my spiritual growth. Men like Bro. Gbenga Fatunbi and Mr. Akindeyi, the principal of my school, took it upon themselves to ensure I grew in Christ. They were relentless in their commitment to my spiritual development, doing everything to shape me into a better Christian.
Bro. Gbenga would never miss an opportunity to ask, “Did you read your Bible today?” He never accepted “no” for an answer, so I either read my Bible or avoided him entirely! He introduced me to impactful mentors like Bro. Gbile Akanni and ensured I read the book Becoming Like Jesus. His persistence instilled a deep hunger for God’s word in me.
Mr. Akindeyi often took us to Deeper Life’s Total Impact Leadership Camp. These camps were all about the Word, prayer, and networking. We would spend days immersed in God’s presence. No sports or games—just a focus on spiritual growth. Those moments were transformative for me.
Pastor Olayemi Victor was another significant influence. He taught me how to fast, pray, and take sermon notes. At just 17, he made me a youth leader, exposing me to leadership early on. He personally baptized me and mentored me to understand ministry and purpose. He even enrolled me in a Bible college! His teachings shaped my foundation for leadership, and I still have his sermons of 2008–2010 in my sermon notes.
Pastor Ben, my Bible College teacher, was the first to guide me through the entire Bible, giving me a comprehensive understanding of God’s Word. And Pastor Festus Adewole encouraged me to fast for an entire year as a teenager, leading me to experience God in powerful ways.
One memorable experience was when I prayed with a friend at our church altar, CCDM, after a strange attack he had in his dream. We spent a whole Saturday in prayer, and by Monday, the situation had completely changed in our favor. That friend of mine is now a general overseer of a church.
My father also played a crucial role in my journey. He edited my first book, which I wrote at 17, and constantly encouraged me to write more. He gave me my first big paper Bible, a big one, which I used all the way through my NYSC year. His unwavering belief in me gave me confidence and fueled my passion for spiritual growth.
The intentional investments these adults made in my life laid the foundation for everything I enjoy today. Their wisdom, guidance, and discipline were pivotal in shaping my destiny.
Your Turn
As a student, don’t underestimate the value of the adults around you. Their experiences, wisdom, and counsel are invaluable for your growth. Technology and exposure might make you feel self-sufficient, but the truth is, life experience cannot be Googled. Be humble enough to listen and learn from those God has placed in your life.
If you lack role models or mentors, ask God to bring the right people into your life. He is a Father who answers prayers and will connect you with the support you need.
For those who have faced pain or disappointment from adults, allow God to heal your heart. Bitterness will only hinder your growth. Open yourself to His love, and let Him restore you.
I’m praying for you that in this season of your life, you will make the most of your youthful years. May you grow in wisdom, strength, and character, surrounded by godly mentors who will guide and challenge you to reach your fullest potential. I pray that your heart will remain tender to God’s voice and that you will walk boldly in His purpose for your life. May every past hurt be healed, and may your future be filled with His abundant grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
