Daily bread

Scripture Focus: “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you… that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not.’” Exodus 16:4 NKJV

The people had just witnessed God split the Red Sea and swallow their enemies, yet by the time they reached the wilderness, they complained again. Hunger pushed them to murmur, but God’s mercy answered with manna. He told them to gather only what was needed for each day and not to keep it overnight. Some disobeyed, and the manna spoiled, reminding them that provision was not about storage but about trust. God wanted them to depend on Him daily, not on their hoarded supplies. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus echoes this principle, “Give us this day our daily bread.” True faith is not anxious about tomorrow; it trusts the Shepherd who provides afresh every day.

It is not wrong to plan or save, but when worry about tomorrow overshadows trust in God, fear replaces faith. Israel was being taught that their survival was not tied to Egypt’s storehouses or their own carefulness but to the faithfulness of God. The same God who rained manna then is the same One who provides for you today. Stop panicking about what the future holds; your Father already holds the future. Each new dawn is another chance to see His mercies, fresh and sufficient. Trust Him daily, lean on Him fully, and you will never be abandoned to hunger or despair.

Prayer: Father, help me to trust Your daily provision and not to be anxious about tomorrow. Teach me to rest in Your unfailing care. Amen.
