DISCERNING TRUE BLESSINGS

Scripture Focus: Genesis 14:21-23; James 1:12

After Abram received a blessing from Melchizedek, the King of Salem, another king, the king of
Sodom, approached him with an offer (Genesis 14:21). One came to bless; the other came to
tempt. The temptation came immediately after the strengthening, a pattern we often see in life.
The real blessing didn’t appear physical or tangible, but it was the true blessing. The offer from
Sodom looked appealing, yet Abram refused it.
Abram had learned his lesson. He had once taken wealth from Abimelech, but this time, he
chose differently. Instead of grabbing earthly riches, he trusted God, the Possessor of heaven
and earth (Genesis 14:22). His strength to resist temptation came from the revelation he had
received from his personal altar. True blessings are not about material gain but about remaining
in God’s will. Like Abram, we must recognize when a so-called blessing is actually a test.
Prayer: Lord, help me to discern between true blessings and distractions. May I always trust in
what You give rather than what the world offers. Amen.
