Do Not Use Pressure to Excuse Disobedience

Scripture:

Genesis 30:3 – “And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.”

Jacob’s decision to sleep with Rachel’s maid, just like Abraham with Hagar, followed the norms of their time, but not the heart of God. Scripture does not outright condemn the act, but the consequences reveal its weight. Chaos, envy, and brokenness filled their homes. What God permits in silence doesn’t always mean He approves.

Rachel’s desperation and Jacob’s compliance show how human desire can override spiritual discipline. Even if the pressure comes from someone we love, that’s no excuse for compromise. Discipline says “no” when the flesh says “yes,” and godly leadership doesn’t yield to every emotional plea. You are responsible for your actions, even if someone else suggests the idea.

God’s original pattern for marriage was never to involve a third party, even for a good reason. Learn to wait for God’s promise without shortcuts.

Prayer:

Lord, help me not to justify compromise. Teach me to follow Your ways, not just what culture allows.
