Scripture Focus: “So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet.” Exodus 15:25 NKJV
Imagine walking in the wilderness for three days without water. Every step is heavier, every breath drier, and then suddenly, you see water. Hope surges through the camp as thousands rush forward, desperate to drink. But the water is bitter. What a crushing disappointment. The Israelites had just experienced the Red Sea miracle, yet here they were again, faced with another test. Their natural response was to complain, but Moses did the right thing, he cried out to the Lord. God did not tell him to use the rod that had just parted the Red Sea; instead, He showed him a tree. When Moses cast the tree into the waters, the waters became sweet. This is a picture of how God works: His methods are not to be assumed or repeated mechanically. The God who used a rod yesterday may use a tree today. He calls us to fresh dependence every day, not stale reliance on past formulas.
That tree also foreshadowed the cross of Christ. Just as the tree made bitter waters sweet, the cross transforms the bitterness of life into sweetness. Without Jesus, life is frustrating, dry, and bitter. With Him, there is joy, healing, and refreshment. Every time we look to the cross, we are reminded that God takes what is impossible and makes it possible, what is broken and makes it whole, what is bitter and makes it sweet. But notice this: the miracle came only because Moses obeyed God’s specific instruction. Familiarity with past victories could have led him to rely on the rod, but obedience to fresh instruction made all the difference. In your walk with God, do not become stuck on methods. Keep listening, keep obeying, and keep looking to the cross. Only then will you find the sweetness of life that Christ alone can bring.
Prayer: Lord, help me not to lean on old methods or past experiences, but to daily hear and obey Your voice. Thank You for the cross that turns my bitterness into sweetness. Amen.
