Scripture Focus: Genesis 14:18-20; Hebrews 7:1-3
After Abram’s victorious rescue of Lot, he was met by Melchizedek, the King of Salem, who
blessed him and offered him bread and wine (Genesis 14:18-20). Melchizedek is a mysterious
figure in Scripture, but the book of Hebrews reveals that he is a type of Christ, a priest without
beginning or end (Hebrews 7:3). His name means “King of Righteousness”, and as the ruler of
Salem (which means peace), he is also called the “King of Peace”, a clear parallel to Jesus
Christ.
Just as Melchizedek was both king and priest, so is Jesus, the ultimate High Priest and King of
Kings (Hebrews 7:24-25). The offering of bread and wine also foreshadows Christ’s sacrifice in
the New Testament, pointing to the communion we now share in Him. Abram’s encounter with
Melchizedek reminds us that true victory and true peace come only through Jesus Christ, our
eternal Priest and King.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for Jesus, my eternal King and Priest. Help me to live under His
righteousness and walk in His peace daily. Amen.
