Spirit vs flesh

Scripture Focus: “Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.” Exodus 17:8 NKJV

Right after Israel drank from the water that gushed out of the rock, a clear picture of the Holy Spirit, Amalek appeared and launched an attack. This is not a coincidence. Amalek throughout Scripture represents the flesh: stubborn, restless, and constantly resisting the Spirit. Whenever the Spirit begins to flow in your life, expect the flesh to rise. Paul captures this tension: “The flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another” (Galatians 5:17). Israel’s battle in Rephidim reminds us that receiving the Spirit’s fullness does not eliminate conflict, it positions us to overcome. The flesh will always attempt to regain control, but by walking in the Spirit, you can subdue its attacks.

This lesson here is that you cannot afford to be careless after great encounters. The moment God fills you, empowers you, or does something miraculous in your life, the flesh, or Amalek, will test you. It may come as temptation, discouragement, or pride. But the Bible assures us that “sin shall not have dominion over you” (Romans 6:14). The strategy is not to indulge the flesh, but to starve it, while feeding your spirit with prayer, the Word, and obedience. Israel could not negotiate with Amalek, they had to fight. Likewise, you cannot pamper the flesh, you must crucify it daily. As long as you live, the Amalekites will try to rise, but as long as you live in the Spirit, you will always win.

Prayer: Lord, help me to walk in the Spirit daily, to crucify the flesh, and to overcome every Amalekite that rises against me. Amen.
