Scripture Focus: Genesis 15:12; Luke 22:20
In Genesis 15:12, as Abram prepared for God’s covenant, a deep sleep fell upon him. This was
not an ordinary sleep, it was a symbolic moment, pointing to something greater. In Scripture,
death and breaking often represent covenant-making. Just as Abram was put into a deep sleep
for God’s covenant, Jesus’ death became the ultimate covenant for us (Luke 22:20).
A covenant requires sacrifice. Abram’s experience foreshadowed Christ’s work, where deep
sleep symbolized death, and the covenant was sealed through sacrifice. Every true covenant
with God involves surrender, breaking, and renewal. Jesus, like Abram, entered a deep sleep of
death, but through it, He established a covenant that can never be broken.
Prayer: Lord, help me to understand the depth of Your covenant. Teach me to surrender fully,
knowing that true life comes through sacrifice. Amen.
