Scripture Focus: Genesis 18:22 to 23; Ezekiel 22:30
What a man Abraham was. After rescuing Lot from captivity he still stood before God and interceded for him again. God had declared judgment on Sodom yet Abraham did not just accept it. He stood in the gap and pleaded for mercy. This is the first recorded intercessory prayer in the Bible.
This teaches us something profound. You can intercede even for things that God has declared. The position of your heart matters. If God revealed to you that destruction is coming to a city do you just sit back and watch it happen or do you cry out for mercy? If you sense danger over a loved one do you accept it or do you pray for intervention? God looks for those who will stand in the gap. Many things happen because no one prays. Abraham’s heart of intercession should be a lesson for every believer today.
Prayer:
Lord make me an intercessor. Teach me to stand in the gap for people and nations. Let my heart be burdened for what burdens Yours. Amen.
