The wisdom of delegation

Scripture Focus: “And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. So they judged the people at all times; the hard cases they brought to Moses, but they judged every small case themselves.” Exodus 18:25–26 NKJV

Leadership is never about doing everything yourself. Moses discovered this truth when Jethro advised him to appoint capable men over the people. If he continued bearing the entire weight of judging two million people, he would soon wear out. By delegating, Moses not only preserved his own strength but also unlocked the gifts of others. God had placed wisdom and ability in many men within Israel, but until Moses shared responsibility, their potential remained unused. This principle remains vital today, whether in ministry, at work, or in the home, leaders must allow others to function in the grace God has given them. Refusing to delegate is not a sign of strength,  it is pride disguised as responsibility. True wisdom is learning to share the load, trusting that God works through many hands and hearts, not just your own.

Yet, balance is important. Delegation does not mean abandoning your God-given responsibilities. Moses still judged the difficult matters, focusing on the bigger issues while others handled the smaller ones. In the same way, leaders must know what to pass on and what to keep. Even Jesus Christ, who trained and empowered His disciples, did not delegate the cross. That was His divine assignment, and He bore it alone. Delegation frees you to focus on what only you can do, while empowering others to use their gifts faithfully. Leaders in ministry must not stifle the grace in their members; leaders at home must not deny their children the chance to grow in responsibility. Share the work, but never abandon the call God has placed on your shoulders. Wise delegation strengthens leadership, preserves energy, and expands impact.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to lead with wisdom. Help me to share responsibilities wisely, empower others to use their gifts, and faithfully carry the assignment You have entrusted to me. Amen.
