Scripture:
Genesis 31:36 – “And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban…”
As children of God, we are instructed to follow peace with all men, and that remains a vital
command. But following peace does not mean enduring abuse in silence. Jacob had been
cheated, mistreated, and manipulated by Laban for years. At some point, the man who had
quietly endured finally spoke up. He confronted Laban; not rudely, but boldly and truthfully.
Abuse should never be ignored. If someone is mistreating or manipulating you, whether in the
family, workplace, or ministry, keeping quiet in the name of peace may only empower their
wickedness. You don’t have to fight or become bitter, but you must not allow yourself to be
crushed in silence. If direct confrontation is dangerous, report it to the right authorities. You are
not less spiritual for standing up for yourself, you are being wise.
Jacob’s story reminds us that it is possible to honor God and still speak up. Respectfully ask
questions. Raise your voice when necessary. Don’t over-spiritualize silence in the face of
oppression. Enjoy grace.
Prayer:
Father, give me boldness and wisdom. Teach me when to speak and how to speak, and never
to endure abuse in the name of peace.
